From the club floors of northern Germany to the airwaves of This Is Electric UK, Kurt Kjergaard has spent over three decades shaping his unique voice in electronic music. What began with 90s Eurodance has evolved into a sophisticated palette spanning Melodic House, Deep House, Indie Dance, and beyond—a testament to an artist who refuses to be confined by genre boundaries.
Named one of the top 3 artists at Dortmund’s Big City Gig in 2023, this Flensburg-based DJ and producer has built an impressive portfolio that includes releases on Emerald & Doreen, Cabaret Clandestino, and Burning Synths, alongside running three successful mix series that champion both established and emerging talent.
For our latest In The Basement series, Kurt delivers an exclusive guest mix that showcases the diversity and creative range that has defined his career. We caught up with him to discuss his evolution as an artist, his thoughts on AI in music production, and what’s next for this veteran of the scene who continues to push boundaries and explore new sonic territories.
1. We’re excited to have you on a guest mix for our “In The Basement” series. Can you tell us what listeners can expect from your mix? What’s the vibe and energy you were going for?
I’d like to showcase my diversity and I want the listeners to have fun with my mix.
2. Your journey in electronic music started back in the 90s, playing in various clubs across Germany. How has your sound and approach to DJing evolved over the decades, and what keeps you inspired after all these years?
My sound has changed a lot over the years. When I started, I played Eurodance and typical 90s tracks. I’ve evolved a lot over the years, which is also reflected in my mixes. I find it very interesting to play different music genres in one mix.
3. Speaking of Germany – you come from the north of the country. How would you describe the current electronic music scene there? Are there any particular clubs, events, or venues you’d recommend to people visiting the region?
I’m from Flensburg which is on the Danish border where the club scene is unfortunately not as developed as in other big cities. But I can say that there are some really cool club locations in Hamburg and Berlin, also in Denmark. In the Denmark Culture Box in Copenhagen.. In Berlin, Panorama Bar, Sisyphos, Ritter Butzke, Beate Uwe, KitKatClub, in Hamburg Baalsaal, Südpol, Uebel & Gefährlich to name just a few.
4. Being named one of the top 3 artists at the Big City Gig in Dortmund in 2023 must have been a major milestone. How has that recognition impacted your career and opened new doors for you?
Yes, it was truly a milestone. I’m very proud of that. My profile has obviously changed… I’ve gotten a few more bookings as a result… 😉
5. You run several successful mix series including “Indie Dance The Mix Series,” “Outside The Box,” and “Indie Dance Sound.” What inspired you to create these platforms, and how do they differ from each other conceptually?
I’ve always wanted my own podcast series. And I think it’s great to give great artists a chance with a mix.
Indie Dance The Mix Series is my newest mix series. This mix series is specifically for the electronic and synth genres… meaning Indie Dance Music / EBM / Dark Disco / Italo Sound, etc I’ve already featured many well-known and regional DJs in this mix series.. e.g., Marc De Pulse / Idoru / SIIE / Neurotiker. Darlyn Vlys (Polaris Records) will also be a guest soon… already fully booked for this year. And we’re already getting tons of requests for the coming year, 2026.
Outside The Box is the oldest Mix Series. I present my own mixes there. The music style ranges from Melodic House to Deep House.
Indie Dance Sound is also a mix series where I present my own mixes. And of course, I also do a lot of mixes for other podcast series and record labels.
6. Can you tell us about your residency on This Is Electric UK?
Yes, of course. I applied to the station and now I have my own radio show there once a month as a resident DJ. I play Melodic House / Progressive House and Electronic Music. I’m very proud to be there because a lot of top DJs and record labels also have their radio shows on the station – Adam Beyer, Armin Van Buuren, Nora En Pure, Blondish, Defected, Anjunadeep and many more.
7. You’ve released on labels like Emerald & Doreen, Cabaret Clandestino, and Burning Synths. As both a producer and remixer, what’s your creative process like in the studio? Do you have any particular production techniques or tools you can’t live without?
I need my Mac Book Pro….;) and a good DAW. I work with Logic Pro from Apple and my Sennheiser headphones and my Arturia Synthesiser.
8. AI is becoming increasingly present in music production and DJing. What are your thoughts on AI in electronic music? Do you see it as a creative tool or does it concern you in terms of authenticity and artistry?
Partly, I think AI is a good tool for finding ideas… but I wouldn’t have the tracks produced by AI !!! The creativity just gets lost. That’s my opinion.
9. Looking ahead, what’s next for Kurt Kjergaard? Any exciting releases, collaborations, or projects you can share with us? Where do you see yourself taking your sound in the coming year?
I still have a lot of tracks in the works. I’m looking for a few remixers and will release the tracks gradually! Let’s see which labels are interesting… 😉 And I’ll be releasing a few guest mixes this year. I’m hoping for some good bookings next year. So stay tuned!
