The early days of house music brought together some of the most innovative musical talents our industry has ever seen, and saw a movement which even 40 years later still inspires younger generations to pursue their passion.
One name which was present during the humble beginnings of the genre is Roland Clark, a veteran of his craft who has since released original productions on labels like Defected, Skint Records, and Strictly Rhythm.
This month Clark returns to Berlin-based imprint Get Physical Music to release his brand new All My Friends EP, the release features the original title track alongside Ant LaRock’s “Sunset Remix”.
We caught up with Roland to chat about both tracks included on the EP, as well as his earliest memories of house music, which other labels we might see him on soon, and more. Get the full discussion below.
Your new “All My Friends” EP, tell us about the original track on this one?
I basically wanted to write something for the times, something different that reflected on how I and many other people are feeling at the moment.
And it includes a great remix from Ant LaRock, what’s your thoughts on that?
Ant LaRock is one of my best friends, and one of my go-to guys when I need something done, and done right. He’s a top notch, down to earth sort of dude, and a very talented guy.
The release comes on Get Physical, a label you’ve worked with quite a bit, what’s your favourite track you’ve released with the German imprint?
So far, I would have to say this current release, not because it’s the latest but because of it’s subject matter.
And which other labels can we expect to see you release on in the coming months?
I have releases coming out on Catch & Release Records, My own inprint Delete International Records, as well as Todd Terry’s techno label Terminator Records.
You’re American, a nation that has an extremely diverse musical history, what are some of the earliest memories you have of house music?
Some of my earliest memories of house music are standing behind the DJ booth at Zanzibar in New jersey and hanging out with some of house music’s future giants like Kerri Chandler, and countless others.
Everyone was waiting their turn to go into the booth to present Tony Humphries with their latest tunes, and he would play them as you gave them to him.
And which other genres of music do you love besides house?
I would have to say R&B and classic rock.
Do you have a guilty pleasure? A pop song you have a soft spot for perhaps?
No, but my guilty pleasure artist is Taylor Swift, excellent song writer and I would love to meet her one of these days at a Dunkin’ Donuts for coffee and a coconut doughtnut, don’t ask lol.
Thanks a lot for chatting to us, before we go, is there anything you want to add?
Only to say “I can’t wait to see all my friends again.”
Roland Clark – All My Friends EP is out now on Get Physical Music.
