English trance and progressive DJ & producer Gareth Emery is apparently not happy with the current compensation system that Spotify has in place to pay artists.
Emery, who is involved in a blockchain-based streaming service called Choon, wrote a letter for Digital Music News that outlined his concerns and frustrations with the current model.
He said: “the whole system is cloaked in secrecy, nobody knows how much they’re going to get paid or when.”
“I have a million monthly listeners on Spotify and I couldn’t rely on it for an income, it probably makes up less than one percent of my income. Touring is the only reliable way an artist can make money these days.”
Spotify, who report annual revenue in the billions have been under constant questioning regarding the payouts to producers and writers.
