Mondo Love & Betrayal step down into Paul Inflyte’s In The Basement series with an 11-track mix that runs from 1980s synth-pop to early house and club soul.
The duo pairs Neil ‘Nail’ Tolliday, one half of Bent, with guitarist, producer and frontman Henry Claude Scott, known for Torn Sail and Brown Fang. A shared love of Japan, Talk Talk, Soft Cell and Pet Shop Boys shaped their self-titled debut album, ten tracks of elegant 80s-inspired synth-pop out now on NuNorthern Soul.
The mix opens with the album’s deceptively upbeat “Seppuku” and closes with “Beyond The Rainy City”, with “Your Latest” arriving late on. In between, Cat Stevens and Pet Shop Boys go back to back before a run of 80s club records from E.S.P., Joyce Sims, Virgo and Sinnamon, plus New Order’s “Confusion”.
