Durban-based DJ & production duo Kususa have had a pretty substantial impact on the world of Afro house music so far, releasing tracks on record labels such as Defected, Ultra Music, and Moblack.
This month they released a brand new album – ‘A Life Worth Living’ – which features an impressively long list of collaborators throughout its twelve-long tracklist.
We spoke to the pair to ask them all about the process of making the album, what else they might have coming soon, and more. Read the full interview with Kususa below!
How has 2024 been for Kususa so far?
We have had a very eventful year, finishing up the album and chasing deadlines was one of the most tantalising for us.
You just released your new ‘A Life Worth Living’ LP – how did the album come about as an idea?
The album came from an urge to make a local impact in our country – South Africa, it is full of iconic South African storytellers, Kususa has been celebrated as an international electronic dance music duo and this album brings it home.
What’s one anecdote that happened during the process of making it?
One of the funniest moments for us was to have to write down lyrics of this one song on the album which was due for submission and we were both clueless and the vocal artist was not available due to some tour commitments.
It includes a pretty extensive list of collaborators! How did you decide who would feature on the album?
The list was a shortlist of a dream-list we had made, and thanks to our A&R team we covered 85% of it. Everyone on the list is a combination of an iconic storyteller in South Africa or a legend in the South African music industry.
Beyond the album, what else might we hear from Kususa in the near future?
We will definitely have to drop the deluxe version as the remaining 15% of our dream-list is still a work in progress. Beyond this we are looking to expand our musical impact on the African continent and beyond.
What’s been one of your favourite tracks of 2024 so far?
Kususa & BlaqRhythm – Umkhumbi Ka Noah.
Is there anything else you want to talk about before we finish?
We appreciate the opportunity of highlighting electronic dance music from Africa, it’s important that y’all keep on opening up this platform with dialogue which engages creatives and increases placement. Kudos to you.
