Interview: Proudly People

Milan-based double act Proudly People have previously put their stamp on the catalogues of record labels such as elrow, Rawthentic, Roush Label, and AVOTRE, making them one of the cities most exciting prospects.

Their latest sonic outing saw them make their debut on New York imprint Revival, with their new 2-track ‘Funky Love’ EP, which combines original titles ‘Funky Love’ and ‘Get It Right’.

We spoke to them recently to chat about the new EP, how they handle both studio sessions and DJ sets as a duo, and their thoughts on the current state of the Italian club scene. Get the full discussion with Proudly People below.

Hi guys, we hope you’re well! Where are you right now, and what are you up to?

Hello there! We are currently in Dubai, getting ready for our gig at Penthouse this week.

You recently dropped your new ‘Funky Love’ EP on Revival New York, how would you describe the two originals on this one?

We are really happy to have dropped these two tracks on Revival as they combine more minimal styles with tougher, tech house percussion, to give the tracks the right dancefloor touch and make them useful at different times of the night.

In the past you’ve also released music with labels like elrow, AVOTRE, and Rawthentic, where else might we see you in the near future?

We have something big on the way, but unfortunately it’s not something that we can announce at the moment. However, we’ll definitely share it shortly. Stay tuned!

You’re of course a duo. How do you typically handle studio sessions, are you always together when making music?

Yes, we have a studio in Milan, and it’s the base and home for all of our ideas. It’s really important for us to produce together as you can immediately exchange opinions and discuss what we are working on and what we want to change or improve, it’s less time wasted and more efficient.

How about DJ sets? Do you play b2b or just split the set into bigger chunks?

We always share the decks and play b2b in our DJ sets. It’s really important for us to combine our styles and give our sets the right balance to represent both of us, which is also true for our productions.

Who are some emerging Italian artists that you think everyone should be aware of?

Many Italian artists are making a great impression in the industry and across the scene at the moment. We’re delighted that some of them are also working with Too Long, the home of our residency.

And your favourite Italian club to play?

What we said for the previous question on Italian artists, we can also say the same for the clubs here. There are a lot of really great clubs in Italy. We were born in Milan and are residents of Too Long, an event that takes place every weekend at Distretto Industriale 4 in the city. The club is getting better and better every year, and it’s already a key place to visit and attend if you are in Milan.

Thanks a lot for taking the time to answer our questions. Is there anything else you would like to mention before we wrap things up?

Thank you for having us, nothing to add, we just hope to see you all on the dancefloor soon.
