Make A Dance have brought music from Man Power, Tom Carruthers, and North 90 to their M.A.D Records imprint since its launch in 2021.
We spoke to the London-based duo recently, where we asked them about their reasons for starting a record label, how things have went so far, and more.
You first launched M.A.D Records in 2021, what pushed you to want a record label of your own?
It was simple really, we wanted to release our own music but do it in the way we wanted and have complete control over the whole process from mastering to artwork. Having a label is a creative outlet and a way to express ourselves.
You’ve since released music from names like Man Power and Tom Carruthers, how do you typically find and sign new music?
It’s pretty organic and each release is very different, sometimes we get sent demos and sign them and sometimes we hit artists up for work. Even though each release is different musically, it all has a common thread and hopefully makes people wanna move.
How would you describe your latest release?
The next thing we have coming out is a split EP for Magari and Ilija Rundam, and it’s an ode to early house music, a tribute to the formative ‘garage-house’ sounds made for and played at New York clubs in the mid 1980s.
And who else can we expect to see on M.A.D Records in the near future?
LOTS! We have music from ourselves, we have a M.A.D 5 years compilation which will come in the form of a triple pack vinyl, we have new music from some core M.A.D artists as well as welcoming new people to the fold.
What’s your favourite record label?
Hard question, from the top of my head: Parkway Records, Klasse Wrecks, Easy Street, Public Possession, and lots more but those ones were on the tip of my tongue.
What’s something that really surprised you about running a record label?
I think the community that has built up around it, with bandcamp I have direct contact with the people buying the records and can see the same people coming back and supporting, It’s a really nice thing being able to send records to them and talk to them over email or DM, kind of feels like a family of like minded people.
And some of your long term goals for the imprint?
The big one we are talking about at the moment is to get a physical space sometime in the near future. We love the idea of a multipurpose space where we could sell the records, and even do our own events, sling some coffee in the day and just turn it into a creative hub.
Anything else you want to add before we go?
Just want to say a big thank you to everyone that’s supported the label so far in anyway, it’s such a trip seeing people resonate with what we do. Without the support we would not be here today. BIG LOVE x.
