Let's Talk: Avision

New York City native Avision has built himself a solid stable of club-primed productions, with labels like Sous Music, Factory 93 Records, and Mindshake Records all featuring amongst his previous releases.

His latest studio effort brings his return to Maceo Plex’s Ellum Audio imprint, a label he’s already released with on several occasions in the past. This time around however, it’s his two-track ‘Good Time / So High’ EP that takes focus.

We spoke to him for this month’s Let’s Talk feature, where we spoke about the new EP for Ellum, his relationship with the label after so many releases, and what else we might hear from him in the coming months. Read the full interview with Avision below.

Hey Avision – I hope everything is going well across the Atlantic?

Hey, all is great! Thank you, and I hope the same for you.

You’re returning to Ellum Audio for the release of ‘Good Time / So High’, talk us through how you made the tracks in the studio?

Yes, I’m super excited about this release as it’s become one of my favourite pieces of work. The studio process was fairly simple. ‘Good Time’ started with just a few elements that I built on. I tend to always start with my drum pattern and find that main groove. Once I laid that down, I added my bassline which anchored the whole record. I don’t know exactly what inspired me to write the lyrics to ‘Good Time’, but it was catchy and I knew once I had that, it all clicked.

‘So High’ was written extremely similarly to ‘Good Time’. That funk drum groove led into my bassline, which led to me building the record with some counter rhythm pluck synths and some nice droning chords. Both productions I’m extremely happy with!

You released your debut album with Ellum back in 2021, as well as a few other EPs and remixes, you must be quite close to the team there at this point?

Oh yeah, we have a great relationship with Ellum. At this point, it’s like extended family. They treat me super well, and I’m super grateful for the whole team at Ellum.

And your catalogue also features releases with Sous Music, Mindshake Records, and Factory 93 Records, where else might we see music from you in the near future?

This year is slammed with releases with labels like Laurent Garnier’s CodeQR, a bunch of remixes coming, especially my official remix to Inner City’s ‘Big Fun’ (super excited for this), another EP coming out on Rejected, which is a label I’ve been a fan of for a long time. There’s much more coming in the summer months as well, and I plan to come back to my label Matter+ with a single by the end of the summer.

Any exciting shows happening for you in March?

Yes, some amazing Miami music week shows are coming up, one at Factorytown and the other at Surfcomber with Nicole Moudaber.

What other goals have you set for yourself for 2024?

My goal this year is to really paint my picture of the artist I want to be. I don’t want to be looked at as just a techno artist, so this year is all about hitting different genres with my music and branching out to different labels as well.

Anything else you want to mention before we go?

Have a ‘Good Time’ after you read this! See ya on the next one.
