Brazil’s techno culture is vast and thriving, and one name at the top of the cities key players is Victor Ruiz. Having put tunes out with Suara, Tronic and Elevate in the past, as well as an official remix for pop sensation Moby, Ruiz is now amongst the techno elite, not just in his home country, but on a global scale.
His most recent outing has come in the form of ‘The Eye Of The Beholder’, a three track EP out on Noir Music. We spoke to Victor about the release amongst other things, like his next gig at Stadt Land Bass and some well remembered advice he received.
Thanks for sitting down with us, how are things in the life of Victor Ruiz?
Thanks for having me – it’s a pleasure to be speaking with you guys. Things have been pretty hectic with the summer in Europe plus I’m moving from São Paulo to Berlin, as well as starting very soon to build a new studio – so you can imagine – BUT things are pretty good and I’m very thankful for life.
You recently celebrated the release of The Eye Of The Beholder, are you excited to have it out?
Yeah, man! I’ve been waiting to release all three tracks for a while – especially ‘Rainbow in the Dark’ that is a very special one for me. The feedback so far from the fans and DJ colleagues are amazing. Better than expected.
How would you describe the release in one sentence?
This is how I see music – different colours, shapes, textures and depths.
Your music has now appeared on labels like Noir Music and Tronic, how does it typically work when organising a release with their teams?
I test a lot my tracks before sending to a label. Most of the labels I’ve released I have already a good relationship with the headmasters, so most of the time – it’s super easy going. With Noir especially it has been really nice to work with them, because I have freedom to express myself as an artist and we go back and forth together on every little detail, so I love it.
And how involved do you like to be when it comes to artwork, social media and promo stuff?
I like to be on top of my game always. I guess this is super important to one’s career. So, I’m always going back and forth with the label, PR agent and whoever else is working together. I love teamwork.
Your next gig is at Stadt Land Bass in Germany, are you excited to play there?
Yes, super! It’s a big festival in the north of Germany with many bands and DJs, so it will be fun for sure.
What tune are you going to open with?
I have no clue! Haha.
Before we go, what is something someone said that has stuck with you throughout your career?
This was a conversation I had with one of my idols that has become a close friend. He told me to not bother or worry about other people that have a bad energy. I have to think myself as a train – a locomotive. Strong and steady, always on track. It doesn’t matter if I go slower than others, I will get to my destination no matter what. Many other people are like motorcycles. They go very fast, but it’s easy to them to crash on the first ‘curve’, you know? This advice got me through some bad times and today I’m still on track.
