British born, of Japanese descent, Maya Jane Coles made a serious statement in 2015 with the release of Nocturnal Sunshine’s self-titled debut album. Now almost five years on, her darkened alter-ego finds a follow up long player in the form of the 15-track ‘Full Circle’. Once again inviting artists like Catnapp and Chelou, who featured on the inaugural record, Full Circle also offers contributions from RY X, Peaches, Gangsta Boo, Young M.A, Cha$ey Jones and Thomas Knights. The tracklist
provides a steady supply of percussion heavy dub electronica, dense grime rhythms and polished hiphop beats, with the drum samples and textures staying consistent across the record, while the diverse palette of genres and tempos prevent things from going stale. Not every track on the album is an essential listen, but at least half should definitely give you something to thoroughly enjoy, and Coles’ always present production values make it equally fitting for the dancefloor as it is for the car or your home sound system. The album is available now on her own I/AM/ME imprint, digitally, on streaming platforms, and as a 12″ release.
Where to start:
