Dutch DJ, producer, and now record label owner Budakid recently brought two new remixes of his ‘Lovin’ Sun’ original to his own Flores label – with Renato Cohen and Hernan Cattaneo & Kevin Di Serna bringing edits.
We spoke to the now Berlin-based artist to ask him about the new tracks, what else we might hear from both him and Flores in 2025, and more.
How are things in the life of Budakid right now?
Hi there, thanks for having me. Very good. Currently touring in east Asia, which always feels like coming home.
You just returned to Flores for the remixes of ‘Lovin’ Sun’, how did you decide who would deliver edits?
The picks are actually based on my personal taste and my DJ playstyle. I’m a huge fan of Renato Cohen who always delivers amazing records, which I play regularly. Hernan Cattaneo & Kevin Di Serna are also a dream team in my ears, they deliver extremely strong productions together. Because the original record is quite laid back, I was looking for different club approaches that twist it up into a more hot club tune.
And what are your thoughts on how each version came back?
I was actually amazed! Both remixes carry the original soul, but serve a different crowd. Renato’s remix is one that carries his unique signature sound with elements and the vocal of the original record. It turned into a peak time club tune that I want to play all over my sets. Where Renato goes into a more housy direction, Hernan & Kevin take it more in a progressive way. With their strong signature groove they twist the original record into a more progressive house track that has more of an openair, festival vibe.
It’s now three releases on Flores since it launched in the summer, who else can we expect to see on the label in 2025?
Yes, correct. Flores is quite a new chapter I’ve started and one that totally excites me. To have total control on visual artworks, design, music, and the whole story of a release really excites me. For 2025 we’ve some tracks signed from upcoming talents and established ones. I can’t tell you their names yet, but I’ve been playing those records already for a while.
2024 has seen your own music on imprints such as Exploited, Last Night On Earth, and DAYS like NIGHTS, you must be happy to have had such a strong year?
Yes, it’s always a pleasure to work with those imprints. I’ve been a big fan of those labels for years already, so releasing on these platforms means a lot to me.
And what’s on your list of goals for 2025?
There’s a lot on the list for 2025. I’ve been thinking of setting up some events and exploring this a bit further. Besides that I’m also keen to dive into fashion a bit more, which is also new territory for me. Music wise one of my goals is to work out my live show, which I started last year. A hybrid/live approach with my own vocals and full of my own records. And of course writing new music, which is for me the fuel for everything.
Anything else you want to talk about before we go?
Yes, I actually do. I’m quite excited about my next release coming up in January with one of my all time favourite artists as a remixer. This record carries some thoughts and reflections of current times. The lyrics and singing I did myself, like my latest record ‘Lovin’ Sun’. Even if it makes me feel vulnerable and fragile, it makes the story I want to tell more clear.
Budakid – Lovin’ Sun (Remixes) EP is out now on his Flores imprint.
