Interview: Schak

Breakthrough British production talent Schak has been getting a glowing reception to his upbeat, heavily energetic brand of club music since late 2022, with previous releases landing on imprints like Trick and Ministry of Sound.

His most recent studio offering – ‘Mama Used To Say’ – arrives just in time for Christmas via Patrick Topping’s Trick, and delivers big on nostalgic dance vocals and pulsating basslines.

We spoke to the Newcastle-based artist to talk about his new track, his relationship with the Trick crew, and what else we might hear from him in the near future. Read the full interview with Schak below.

Schak! How are things going over in Newcastle?

Life is incredible, I’ve had such a good year and so much support. It’s honestly overwhelming to receive so much love.

You just dropped ‘Mama Used To Say’ on Patrick’s Trick imprint, how have you found the reception to the track so far?

The reception has been good, this song is a dedication to my mam and all the mothers out there, for the endless sacrifices they make every single day.

‘Moving All Around’ got remixes from Skream, John Summit, and Ben Nicky, can we expect more heavyweights to jump on edits of ‘Mama Used To Say’ in the coming months?

For this track I’ve decided I don’t want any remixes because it’s a song from my heart to my mother, so it’s too personal to be remixed.

Besides one track on Ministry of Sound, you’ve released exclusively with Trick so far, what’s your favourite thing about working with those guys?

I love the Trick fam! Honestly it’s such a living vibrant family. I guess my favourite thing is being around such fantastic people whom I’m lucky enough to call friends. What Patrick and his team have created is nothing short of amazing and I’m eternally grateful to be part of it for without them I wouldn’t be here having this interview with you!

And will you be releasing with any other labels in the near future?

Yes I have forthcoming releases on Ministry of Sound, Bebe Musica, Stereohype, and of course Trick!

You’ve had a pretty incredible 2023, what’s been a highlight for you this year?

Wow what a question! I can’t pick one specific moment but Creamfields & WHP with Trick and playing St James’s Park for the Carabao Cup semi final I would say are some of my most memorable.

And one of your goals for 2024?

That would be telling.

Want to mention anything else before we go?

Just like to say a massive thank you to all of my supporters this year, without you guys I would never been in this incredible, magical position, you’ve made my wildest dreams come true I love you so much.

Schak – Mama Used To Say is out now on Trick.
